Werder Bremen squad captain Marco Friedl – considered one of the primary reasons why SV Werder Bremen have recently pulled themselves out of a horrible midseason slump – has been rewarded with a new contract. The Hanseaten confirmed a new deal for the 27-year-old on Friday. Details of the length were not divulged. Friedl’s previous deal was set to expire at the end of next season.
The importance of Friedl to the team became immensely apparent at the beginning of the current calendar year. When a medial ligament injury kept the Austrian international out of the lineup, Werder experienced a horrible general run of form. Without their defensive linchpin, Bremen conceded 17 goals in six league games. Since Friedl’s return, Ole Werner’s team has conceded just one goal in their last three league fixtures.
With Bremen back on course to compete for Europe, extending with the skipper constituted a top priority. Werder have already confirmed the summer departures of long-held players Milos Veljkovic and Anthony Jung. It was confirmed this week that striker Marvin Ducksch received an automatic contract extension tied to performance metrics, but the German striker has left it open whether or not he’ll transfer out this offseason.
Werder actors Justin Njinmah and Felix Agu are being linked with moves away from the club. Scottish striker Oliver Burke may or may not remain. Even head coach Werner himself doesn’t have a deal beyond next season. With so much uncertainty surrounding the team, the SV administrative team at the very least needed to get one of their most reliable performers tied down.
“We are very pleased that Marco wants to continue journey with Werder,” SV licensing head Peter Niemeyer noted in a club statement, “It’s a strong signal demonstrates his identification with our club. As captain, Marco is an important pillar of the team. He will continue to be one of the players around whom we want to build an exciting and promising team in the future.“ “After seven years in Bremen, I am one of the longest-serving players at the club and have experienced all the highs and lows,” the player himself added. “That naturally creates a special bond and I have a lot of emotions invested in the club. I am convinced that those responsible are on the right track with the team and am therefore very much looking forward to what lies ahead.”
