Liverpool’s title chase edged closer to glory — and they didn’t even need to lace up their boots. On Wednesday night, Crystal Palace did the heavy lifting for Arne Slot’s side with a battling 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Emirates, a result that may have decisively tipped the Premier League title race.
It was Arsenal’s 13th draw of the season, a statistic that paints a picture of near misses and squandered leads. Twice Mikel Arteta’s side went ahead. Twice, Oliver Glasner’s Palace found a response. The point means Arsenal can now finish with a maximum of 79 points. Liverpool, currently ahead in the standings, only need a draw against Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday to secure their 20th league title — a figure that would see them pull level with Manchester United in the all-time tally.
Palace weren’t just satisfied with spoiling Arsenal’s night. The club’s social media team added fuel to the Premier League title race with a now-viral post on X. “You’re welcome Liverpool…” read the cheeky message, clearly aimed at endearing themselves to the red half of Merseyside while poking fun at the north London side’s faltering title hopes.
It’s a moment of humour that also captures just how tight and dramatic this title race has been. In a league often defined by individual brilliance and tactical nuance, it was Palace’s resilience — and a sprinkle of social media mischief — that stole the midweek headlines.
Palace boss Oliver Glasner had every reason to rotate. His side were coming off an intense fixture schedule and had another match looming. But ahead of the Arsenal clash, he was adamant that integrity and competition would not be sacrificed.
“I never complain about fixtures, but this is not the best choice from the Premier League to have Villa play tonight and us tomorrow,” Glasner said in his press conference. “It would be fair to have both teams play on the same day, either on Tuesday or Wednesday and at this stage of the season, it can influence, if you have two more days to rest.”
Still, he made his priorities clear: “We have to accept it, and I am pretty sure we will be ready as a club.”
More importantly, Glasner promised a strong side: “We have to look at what’s best and which players are in the best shape, but that doesn’t mean we will make 10 changes tomorrow. I expect both teams entering the pitch to win the game. We expect Arsenal to play their strongest team. The fans deserve to see the best teams, and we will play with the best available team tomorrow.”
It’s the sort of attitude that wins fans across neutral grounds — and, this week, in Liverpool.
With the numbers now laid out, the scenario is simple. Liverpool need just one point against Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs to end their title wait and mark the start of a potentially historic new era under Arne Slot.
Crystal Palace may not have had the stakes themselves, but their impact on the outcome cannot be overstated. In what’s becoming a defining characteristic of the Premier League’s late season drama, it’s not always the giants who dictate the pace — sometimes, it’s the disruptors who shape the story.
And for Liverpool, that story might just have taken its most crucial twist yet.
