The 53-year-old arrives after spending more than a decade with Atletico Madrid, where he oversaw recruitment during a successful spell for the Spanish side. His time with Atletico included two La Liga title successes.

Berta arrives at Arsenal as a replacement for Edu Gaspar, who surprisingly stepped down from his role in November.

The former will work closely with Arteta and the club’s recruitment team to strengthen the Arsenal squad in the upcoming transfer windows. On Sunday, it was revealed that Berta is interested in a deal for Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of facing Fulham tomorrow evening, Arteta backed the new arrival to have a positive impact at the Emirates.

“Yes, we were all involved. What I liked the most is how much he wanted to come to the club. He was really attracted in the opportunity and he believes he can help us in achieving what we want.

“He is going to be someone who is going to impact the club. He has got that personality and charisma and the will to win, which is going to be contagious. That is what we want to achieve and to have people who have already done that is really helpful.”
