Manchester United are looking to right some of their wrongs this summer by targeting a couple of former flames.
Whether or not deals will actually materialise remains to be seen, but the Red Devils have now been linked to two former academy stars who’ve been excelling at their new clubs.
Indeed, Alvaro Carreras and Angel Gomes are reportedly of interest to INEOS chiefs, having departed Old Trafford in 2024 and 2020, respectively.
Carreras, 21, was signed by Benfica last summer after impressing on his half-season spell. Ironically, he was sent on loan in the winter transfer window at a time when Erik ten Hag had no left-backs available in the squad and was forced to utilise Diogo Dalot and Victor Lindelof in Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s absences.

As for Gomes, United did actually try to convince him to stay by offering him a new deal. However, a lack of game time prompted the then-teenager to consider his options elsewhere, eventually deciding to ply his trade in the French division with Lille.
He’s certainly become an established, dynamic midfielder since making the switch, too. In fact, his efforts at club level and for England at the U21 Euros in 2023 prompted Lee Carsley to award Gomes his maiden England call-up when he succeeded Gareth Southgate as interim manager.
The London-born talent, 24, proceeded to earn his first cap in a Nations League clash against the Republic of Ireland last September. After the Three Lions’ win, United legend Roy Keane singled out the star for his stellar showing, hailing him as ‘pure quality’ during ITV’s coverage.
Now in the final three months of his contract with Lille, Gomes is garnering widespread interest across Europe – so much so that he’s already rebuffing offers from a Premier League club.
The Guardian reports that Gomes has turned down a proposal worth £100,000 per week from West Ham due to it not being ‘high enough’. Graham Potter is said to be a ‘big fan’ of the former Red, while Barcelona are also keeping tabs on his situation ahead of a potential move.
