Nearly three years after his return to his home country, Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Julian Weigl could be heading abroad again. Sky Austria reports that the 29-year-old was spotted in Salzburg in recent days. RB Salzburg’s German personnel executive Rouven Schröder, not to mention RB Head-of-Global Soccer Jürgen Klopp, may be interested in bringing the Bundesliga professional to the Austrian Red Bulls.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg recently linked Weigl with a potential move to Leeds United, where he would be reunited with former Gladbach head coach Daniel Farke. Both Weigl and his current Westphalian club may be dissatisfied with the current arrangement. The player draws a high salary from Gladbach and has been unable to revive his German national team career in his current location.

Weigl once seemed destined for greatness after rising through the Borussia Dortmund academy ranks and earning six German national team caps. An unfortunate injury ahead of the 2018 World Cup regrettably derailed his career and Dortmund eventually shipped him out to Benfica in January 2020.

Gladbach initially took him on loan from the Portuguese capital city side during the 2022/23 season and paid a reported €7.8m to acquire him permanently the subsequent summer. Benfica were only able to recoup a small amount of the €20m they paid for him.

\Weigl – who took some heat from sporting director Roland Virkus after a recent suspect Bundesliga performance – presently maintains an estimated market worth of €6m. His BMG contract runs through 2028.
