Brentford fans arrived at St James’ Park with hopes high.
A run of five away away wins in a row had made the Bees the in-form Premier League side when it came to matches away from home the past three months.
Fair to say they are loving Sandro Tonali!
The man who isn’t keen on Sunderland, following up two class goals in the 3-1 League Cup in December, with an absolute thunderbolt on Wednesday night.
Brentford fans also having plenty to say about the referee, the claimed bad luck, the perceived injustice…
Brentford fans reacting following defeat to Newcastle United, comments via their Griffin Park Grapevine forum:
AFTER BRENTFORD EQUALISER:
‘Come on Bees. Let’s win this.’
‘RIght let’s do this . A win here is massive. LET’S DO THIS.’
‘Newcastle are rattled.’
‘They’ll lose their heads if we win, even more reason to batter them!’
AFTER STUNNING SANDRO TONALI GOAL:
‘Tonali with a worldie.’
‘What the f… happened there?’
‘Is that a shot or a cross? Either way, it’s a walloped rocket from Tonali.’
‘What a goal.’
‘Absolute fluke.’
‘Wonder goal.’
‘That’s just f…ing ridiculous. You will never get two luckier shonkier goals if you watch this game for the rest of your life.’
‘Flekken you clown.’
‘I cant believe you are even suggesting it may have been an error by Flekken’
‘I reckon he definitely meant that, the way he strikes it and follows through.’
‘You don’t hit a ball that hard without meaning to.’
‘I’d love to believe it was a mishit cross but I can’t see how you’d get the power to beat a keeper from there with a mishit. Can’t make up my mind if Flekken should do better or not.’
‘Saw the goal back a few times. He’s definitely going for goal there.
Obviously saw Flekken off his line and took the opportunity, but can’t blame Mark there.
As Nevin says 99.9% that isn’t going in.
Can’t bloody get anything at Newcastle.’
‘Yep. Clearly a shot with that power on it. Flekken just wouldn’t have expected it.’
‘There is no way on this god’s earth that a keeper can position himself to legislate for a 1% chance of a miskick.’
POST-MATCH:
‘What can we do, the Saudi’s have bought the league. It’s not worth getting het up about, this isn’t a sport anymore.’
‘Bloody good effort against a team with the same line up that won the World Cup at Wembley a few weeks ago.’
‘We don’t get much luck against these do we?’
‘We have a squad capable of challenging for the top eight, this is a huge achievement.
Last nights game was a microcosm of this progress, we were perhaps a poor penalty decision and two somewhat unlucky goals from a very positive result against a Toon side that had previously dismantled the Champions Elect in a Cup Final. The future looks very bright.’
‘Refs a joke. Two fouls on us and nothing, as soon as we lean to win it back he gives them one
It’s so unfair this division.’
‘Tindall got a yellow finally for being in the technical area. He should have one a game.’
‘Gutted, we didn’t deserve to lose that.’
‘How have we lost that I’ll never know.’
‘Looks like a stonewall penalty ignored by VAR at the end, no idea why. Sigh.’
‘Disgraceful from the ref. Allowed them to waste a huge amount of injury time and adds 1 extra on, and that looked a certain penalty on dams at the end there.’
‘Thomas Frank just asked Tonali whether he meant that goal. They both smiled whatever that means!’
‘The only reason they didn’t give a penalty there was because it would have cost Newcastle two points.’
‘Having watched the replays, the one at the end on Damsgaard wasnt a penalty, Guimaraes just gets to the ball first and Dams kicks him.’
‘You get the feeling that we’ll never, ever get a win up there.
Did very well tonight, but everything seemed to go against us. If their first goal was weird, then their second was mystifying. We should’ve gone 2-1 with the Pinnock chance.
Don’t think they deserved anything more than a point, and we deserved far more than zero.’
‘We were the better team overall or at least worth a point. A fully fit Damsgaard for 90 mins and it’s probably a comfortable win. I’m not sure about the various penalty shouts, will need to watch them back, but I don’t know why they played 49 minutes in the first half. Second for them is a wondergoal. Shame it had to come against us.’
‘An even game, probably deserved a point but we didn’t test Pope enough. A few poor performances from individuals but still plenty of positives to take. Beaten by a brilliant yet flukey strike.’
‘Looking at the replay (once) I thought Damsgaard was just second to the ball to be honest so if anything a foul the other way but mighty close.’
‘Looked pretty clearly a pen. Bruno gets there second and cleans Damsgaard out quite intentionally.’
‘It was the other way round unfortunately.’
‘Fuming at the referee letting them play until they scored in the first half. Another shocker of a referee will no doubt be brought / bought by our opponents on Sunday.’
‘Authorities didn’t want to ruin their party.’
‘I have watched that late penalty shout 5 or 6 times now, close ups too and Guimaraes wins the ball cleanly and Mikkel actually kicks him.
Dont get me wrong, i was screaming for a pen at first look, but after seeing the replays its clearly not.’
‘I thought 1-0 to them at HT was a fair reflection but we were much better second half and probably deserved a point. It was VAR who ruled on the late penalty shout which must’ve been close. It was a decent performance from us but I don’t think we did enough to win all the same. Flecken was unlucky with their winner as he would have been expecting a cross and wasn’t in position to deal with the one in a hundred effort that flew in.’
‘We all know exactly what the decision would have been, had the boot been on the other foot, and Newcastle had “needed” the decision……
Which is the most frustrating thing of all…’
‘Bruno puts his foot between Mikkels and the ball.
Mikkel kicks Brunos foot onto the ball, thats why the ball goes that way, its pretty clear.’
‘Respect to the travelling bees – fantastic support. Deserved a point at least.’
‘Bankes decided the result. The big away support deserved a better outcome but the team tried so hard and our injuries hurt us.’
