Celtic have been linked with a move for Mathias Kvistgaarden of Brondby IF for years now. In fact, there have been rumours that they have tried to sign the striker on more than one occasion in the past but have failed to pull it off. Despite that, there have been suggestions that the Hoops will look to bring in the Danish youth international once again this summer.

Celtic parted ways with Kyogo Furuhashi in the winter. Even though the Japanese forward was the club's first-choice number 9, they did not go out and bring in a replacement, instead moving Daizen Maeda to a central role.

For a long time, Kvistgaarden has been viewed as the perfect replacement for Kyogo. The two are believed to have a similarity in their games.

Maeda has shined in that role though. And now, it looks like Celtic might not even been looking to sign a top-class striker in the summer transfer window.

Instead, Celtic's focus might now have shifted towards signing a top winger this summer. As reported by The Celtic Way, Rodgers said:

"I think he can be (the main striker). I think it's one where to replace, to move him onto the side and take him out of the middle, with all due respect, it's probably easier for us to get a top winger than it is a top striker. "

If Celtic sign a player for a transfer fee in the region of £14 million, which is rumoured to be what it would take to sign Kvistgaarden, then he has to come in and establish himself as a starter from the off. But this season, we have seen Maeda score 30 goals already and the 40-goal mark seems to be within reach.

So, is Kvistgaarden capable of coming in, taking Maeda's place in the team and then producing those sorts of numbers straight off the bat? It is not impossible but very unlikely.

Then there is the Jota situation. He has done well since coming back in the winter and there is a belief that there is a lot more to come from him, once he finds his best rhythm once again. Moving Maeda back to the left could mean leaving the Portuguese winger out of the team, which is not ideal.

So, all things considered, Celtic might be better suited trying to sign a winger next summer. Unfortunately, that might mean that the long-running chase to bring in Kvistgaarden is over.
