Chelsea can’t afford to ruin a third season with short-sighted decision over £14m talent

Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation is a mystery, and rumours coming out today have only added to that sense.
As it stands, Robert Sanchez is our number one, Filip Jorgensen is our number two, and young Mike Penders is the heir to the throne.
But Sanchez has been dreadful this season, once again, Jorgensen hasn’t looked any better when given a chance, and Penders is still too young and too raw to be considered a potential first choice just yet.
There is another wildcard in the mix – Djordje Petrovic was our first choice for a large spell last season, and has since had a superb run on loan with Strasbourg in Ligue 1 on loan. Most Chelsea fans would be delighted to see him come back and be first choice next season – he was preferable to Sanchez last season, and seems to have improved since then.

But Chelsea’s sporting directors are seemingly trapped in the sunk cost fallacy of Sanchez and Jorgensen, determined to make them work at any cost to the team’s results. That means there are whispers that Petrovic could be sold to one of a number of interested teams, with Aston Villa from the Premier League, Bayern Leverkusen from the Bundesliga and Juventus from Serie A all mentioned as suitors in an exclusive by Football Insider today.
To sell Petrovic and have Sanchez as number one for a third season running would be totally criminal. Villa seems an unlikely destination given they already have Emi Martinez, but Juventus and Leverkusen could offer good money, and it’s easy to see our sporting directors getting tempted by a quick profit on a player they paid just £14m for in 2023.
To us, that would be a mistake.
