Recent days have seen a real increase in the chatter around Chelsea’s interest in winger Jamie Gittens.

The Borussia Dortmund player is one we’ve been linked to a lot, but things went up a gear with Florian Plettenberg’s report that we have “concrete interest” in the Englishman and have already made contact with his club about buying him.

With the Club World Cup coming around in less than 2 months, time is of the essence.

But another factor thrown into the mix by GiveMeSport was a really interesting one that made us rethink our whole summer a little. They suggested that the Blues could go ahead with their plan to sign Jadon Sancho from Manchester United (top sources like Fabrizio Romano have already confirmed that we’ve activated the €25m option to make his loan permanent.

However our plan would then be to use Sancho as a bargaining chip to sign Gittens. We know Sancho likes playing there and we know they like him too – he had a good run last season when loaned there for 6 months. It’s a nice idea all around. If Gittens comes in and we also have Estevao Willian on the books, it’s probably best to deal Sancho away.

Swap deal sounds possible, but not likely

Jamie Gittens as a young player at Dortmund.

Of course, swap deals have so many moving parts that we’re already slightly reluctant to believe they’re happening, But this one at least has the ring of logic to it. It will be very interesting to see how the desire to get deals done in June affect things too – if all parties are happy with the move it shouldn’t take long. But things like Sancho’s new wage with Dortmund could prove tricky to agree quickly.

If we pull this off, this could be a real coup.
