Cristiano Ronaldo fought back tears as Al-Nassr were knocked out of the AFC Champions League by Kawasaki Frontale in the semi-final of the competition on Wednesday.
Although the Knight of Najd dominated possession, Kawasaki created numerous opportunities and went 3-1 ahead after Akihiro Lenaga’s 76th-minute strike.
Ayman Yahya reduced the deficit in the 87th minute before Ronaldo had the chance to equalise and take the game to extra time.
But the Portuguese superstar failed to hit the target from point-blank range as Al-Nassr slumped to a disappointing 3-2 defeat at the King Abdullah Sports City.
Their elimination from the continental club competition means the Riyadh-based side could once again end up trophyless this season.
Ronaldo’s individual statistics have been phenomenal since he joined Al-Nassr in December 2022, but a major trophy still continues to elude him in Saudi Arabia.
The 40-year-old has bagged 33 goals and four assists in 38 games across all competitions this season.
There has been plenty of speculation regarding the forward’s future, as his current contract expires in June.
But he continues to defy expectations at 40 and may sign another deal with Al-Nassr this summer.
Ronaldo is targeting the 2026 World Cup with Portugal, and it would be a surprise if he is not in the squad.
