Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez says he wants to forget about his struggles for Liverpool this season while on international duty with Uruguay.
Despite the Reds sitting top of the Premier League, Nunez’s own form has been disappointing with the striker scoring just five Premier League goals in 23 appearances.
The 25-year-old moved to Liverpool from Benfica in 2022 for a whopping £85m but has struggled to live up to that price tag since arriving.
He managed 15 goals in 42 games in all competitions in his first season at the club, followed by 18 in 54 last season.
Currently away on international duty with Uruguay, Nunez says he wants to put his club form to one side for now.
“[I’m motivated] to forget a little about what’s happening there [at Liverpool],” he told Uruguayan media outlet El Pais. “Besides, there’s nothing more beautiful for a player than wearing your country’s jersey.
“I’m happy thinking about the national team, enjoying every minute with it; these are moments that one goes through in football, and as I said recently: I’m not someone who throws in the towel because they don’t play, but rather I’m going to keep working so I can play.
“I know I’m not performing as well as I should; it’s difficult because when you’re doing well, like when I came on against PSG (in France, where I provided the assist for Harvey Elliott’s goal), your confidence changes, with the idea of being able to break it in the next match.
“But then you get a slump, and I’m always there to help my teammates come back to the national team.
“I’m strong in my head, since my family always supports me, and that’s the important thing to keep working and bring joy to everyone, like beating Argentina to get the three points.”
Nunez has failed to nail down a starting place under new boss Arne Slot this season and endured more disappointment when he missed his penalty in the Champions League shoot-out defeat to PSG.
Speculation persists that he could leave the club this summer too, with Saudi Arabian clubs being heavily linked with a move for the striker.
