Five potential replacements for Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool

Trent Alexander-Arnold is understood to have reached an agreement with Real Madrid over a free transfer move to Spain this summer.

It’s a huge – if expected – blow to the Reds, who will lose one of their most important names without recouping a fee to reinvest.

Alexander-Arnold is also a unique talent, having redefined the right-back role with his playmaking at Anfield. A like-for-like replacement appears impossible to find, but who could arrive to help fill the void?

Conor Bradley is well-regarded at Liverpool and sure to see his minutes increase, but another option is needed as Arne Slot’s side look to compete on all fronts.

Five potential replacements for Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool

Jeremie Frimpong – Bayer Leverkusen

Perhaps the first name on the list when it comes to matching the excitement Alexander-Arnold brings to the full-back role. Frimpong is more perpetual motion than playmaker but has emerged as one of the most effective wide options in world football at Bayer Leverkusen.

The Dutchman scored nine goals and provided seven assists in the Bundesliga last season, as Leverkusen upset the odds to win a maiden German title without losing a game. He’s impressed again this time around with nine goal contributions from 19 league starts. Though primarily forward-thinking, Liverpool are well accustomed to the trade-off of defensive fragility for the attacking end product that Frimpong brings.

His past experience of British football, homegrown status and £34m release clause make this a deal worth considering.

Pedro Porro – Tottenham Hotspur

Though not quite a like-for-like replacement, Pedro Porro comes fairly close when assessed against other right-back candidates. The Spaniard’s delivery can be delightful and he ranks in the top eight percent of full-backs in Europe for progressive passes and shot-creating actions per 90 minutes. His 12 assists in the Premier League since the start of last season are two more than Alexander-Arnold has managed across the same period.

Like the England international, he’s not always been sound defensively but brings more tenacity to his defensive work than the seemingly outgoing Liverpool man. Spurs are unlikely to want to sell Porro, but with Djed Spence’s emergence and the likely absence of Champions League football, a bid could prove persuasive.

Daniel Munoz – Crystal Palace

Daniel Munoz has quietly gone under the radar to emerge as one of the Premier League’s most exciting wing-backs. A £6m snip from Belgian side Genk, Munoz has been a big hit at Crystal Palace with his endless energy and desire to get into goalscoring areas.

He’s been the perfect fit for Oliver Glasner’s wing-back system and has returned an impressive three goals and four assists in the Premier League this season. It’s not just attacking output either, with the Colombian ranked second in the division for tackles won (61).

He’ll be 29 in May and would represent an atypical Liverpool signing. For the right price, however, he could be an ideal short-term solution as Conor Bradley matures.

Vanderson – AC Monaco

Snapped up from Gremio as a youngster, Vanderson has grown in stature during his four seasons in French football. The Brazilian continues to be linked with Europe’s elite and Barcelona are reportedly among his suitors.

Vanderson’s desire to get high up the pitch is well associated with South American full-backs and could make him an ideal successor.

His output would need to be improved to reach the top level, but Vanderson has a potential that can be nurtured. Already, at 23, he ranks in the top 15% of full-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for successful take-ons, attacking penalty area touches, tackles, interceptions and blocks.

Lutsharel Geertruida – RB Leipzig

Lutsharel Geertruida was a firm favourite of Arne Slot’s at Feyenoord where his stellar showings attracted interest from Europe. The 24-year-old joined RB Leipzig last summer and has struggled to make the expected impact, but could be a player of interest to Slot.

His final season in the Eredivisie saw Geertruida score eight goals and provide five assists from right-back, while he’s also excelled at centre-back and in midfield on occasion.

Given doubts over Joe Gomez’s future in addition to Alexander-Arnold’s imminent exit, the multi-functional Dutchman could be a shrewd addition. It’s not quite worked out at Leipzig but Slot has brought the best out in him before.
