Former Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello was one of the main attractions at the recent Laureus Awards ceremony held on Monday.
Known for his straightforward and honest opinions, the Italian took time to reflect on the current situation at Real Madrid, expressing his support for Carlo Ancelotti, who he coached and considers a close friend.
Capello spoke openly about the challenges Ancelotti is facing this season, Kylian Mbappe’s adaptation to the club, and gave his thoughts on the upcoming Copa del Rey final.
When asked about Ancelotti’s links with the Brazil national team, Capello had no doubts.
“Ancelotti is the most important coach in the world,” he stated confidently.

“He’s the one with the most titles and stands above the rest. The World Cup may be the last important competition for him and he could end up winning titles with Brazil.”
Capello also addressed the recent criticism directed at Ancelotti by the Spanish media, something he believes is unfair.
“I know Real Madrid, and I know how the Spanish press operates. Once they decide they don’t like you, they stick to it. It doesn’t matter how many titles you’ve won—nothing is ever enough,” Capello said.
He pointed out the lack of balance in the current Real Madrid squad as a major reason behind the team’s struggles this season.
“Defensively, they have suffered. Carvajal’s injury was a big blow, and the right wing has been a problem all year. With Kroos gone, there’s also no one in midfield who can bring that calm and control. These are real issues.”
Capello also gave his honest assessment of Kylian Mbappe’s debut season at Real Madrid.

“The first half of the season was tough for him. He needed time to understand where he was. The Madrid shirt is heavy—there’s a lot of responsibility.
“For two months, we didn’t see the Mbappé people expected. But then he started scoring,” he explained.
However, Capello believes the team still has an attacking issue. “There’s no real centre-forward. Both Mbappe and Vinicius prefer playing on the wing, but they can’t both stay wide. It creates a tactical dilemma.”
When asked about the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, Capello made his stance clear.
“It’s going to be a hard-fought match. But Real Madrid must win. They’re second in La Liga and out of the Champions League.
“This final is crucial—it’s their chance to save the season. They have to go all out to lift that trophy,” he noted.
