Manchester United produced a cinematic performance when they defeated Olympique Lyonnais 5-4 after extra time.
Despite being down by two goals in extra time, Man United showed the resolve that was required to claw their way back from almost certain defeat and book their spot in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals.
One player who certainly exemplified United’s determination was centre-back Harry Maguire.
Just minutes before the final whistle, Maguire raced into the final third to support his team’s attacking build-up. Casemiro lobbed a threatening cross to Maguire, who headed the ball into the back of the net to hand United what was easily their sweetest victory of the season.
What’s more, Maguire produced a magnificent assist earlier in the contest, crossing the ball to Diogo Dalot at the stroke of half-time to hand United a 2-0 lead.
Uncharacteristically for a centre-back, Maguire was a constant attacking threat, getting a shot on target and another off target in addition to his goal.
Aside from his superb assist, the Englishman’s passing game was impressive. 34 of his 41 passes met their target, giving him an 83% passing accuracy.
He also completed one key pass while five of his 10 long balls met their target.
Despite letting in four goals, Maguire was certainly not the weak link in his defence. He made six clearances throughout the encounter while blocking three shots. He also made an interception and one tackle.
Maguire also brought plenty of physicality to the contest, winning three of four ground duels. He also came off best in one of his two aerial battles.
While not every aspect of the defender’s gameplay was flawless, he brought the heart and resolve to the pitch that was required to resurrect his team after going 4-2 down.
As United make their way into the Europa League semi-finals, Maguire could play a crucial role in guiding his team to victory yet again, especially since this is United’s last opportunity to secure silverware as well as a place in the Champions League next season.
