One of football’s leading statisticians have weighed in on the debate surrounding the latest goal netted by Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé.

Frontman Mbappé was for his part of course on target to the tune of a brace over the weekend.

En route to a 3-2 Real Madrid victory over Leganés in La Liga, the Frenchman proved himself the star of the show, notching both the game’s opener, and decisive fifth goal.

His 2nd came from a free-kick situation, which saw Mbappé direct a brilliant effort home from the edge of the penalty area.

And yet, in the game’s aftermath, many attempted to talk down the 26-year-old’s accomplishment.

Owing to the fact that Fran García laid the ball off for Mbappé, some argued that he should not technically be credited with the first free-kick goal of his career.

Adamant that Real Madrid’s in-form attacker can now claim as much, though, are the reliable Opta.

As per Sofascore, citing statistical experts Opta:

‘To clear up any confusion — our official stat provider, Opta, deem situations such as Mbappé’s as free kick goals, despite involvement from other players prior to the shot.’
