Rasmus Hojlund has said that he “fell in love with football” because of former Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Red Devils’ young striker went 21 games without a goal in all competitions before ending his frustrating dry spell on Sunday night against Leicester City.
Hojlund put Man Utd ahead in the 28th minute, latching onto a pass from Bruno Fernandes before slotting a right-footed finish into the far corner.
Alejandro Garnacho doubled their lead on 67 minutes before Fernandes wrapped up a comfortable 3-0 victory with a late third.
Hojlund, as well as other United players, have now headed off on international duty.
The 22-year-old will be in action for Denmark who are set to face Portugal on Thursday in the Nations League.
The Dane could go head-to-head with his idol and former United star Cristiano Ronaldo, which is an exciting prospect for Football Blog fans.
In an interview with DR, Hojlund said Ronaldo is simply everything to him and he fell in love with football because of the Portuguese forward.
“Now I’m not going to exaggerate, but Cristiano is everything to me,” he said.
“I fell in love with football because of Cristiano, I became a Manchester United fan because of Cristiano, I started self-training because of Cristiano, I started doing push-ups and sit-ups every day before I went to bed, because of Cristiano, because I wanted to be Cristiano.”
Manchester United splashed an enormous fee worth up to £72 million for signing Hojlund in the summer of 2023.
However, the Dane has failed to live up to his price tag. He has shown glimpses of his quality but has struggled to find a consistent run of form.
In 82 appearances across all competitions, the centre-forward has scored only 24 goals and created four assists.
His struggles in his debut campaign were understandable as he left Atalanta to come play in the toughest league in the world.
However, Hojlund should have been scoring goals on a consistent basis this season, which he hasn’t so far.
Now that he has ended his goal drought, United fans will hope his quality in front of goal will improve in the coming matches.
