Barcelona have been handed a major boost in their title hopes as Real Madrid have recently dropped points to Valencia.
The reigning Spanish champions slumped to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Los Che, a defeat that has gotten Carlo Ancelotti quite worried, with regard to the team’s chances of retaining the title.
As for Barcelona, they could extend their lead at the top to six points if they secure a victory over Real Betis later tonight.
With only nine games remaining, Barcelona sit on 66 points from 29 matches, three ahead of Real Madrid, who have played a game more. Atletico Madrid trail further behind with 57 points.
This means should Barça manage to win their next five league matches, they would enter the El Clasico against Real Madrid on May 11 with a chance to officially clinch the La Liga title — and that too, in front of home fans at the Montjuic.

It would be a fitting stage for the Catalans, who already defeated Madrid 4-0 in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
Another win on home territory, this time to seal the league, would be symbolic and hugely satisfying for Hansi Flick’s men.
That said, securing five back-to-back wins is easier said than done. Between now and El Clasico, Barcelona are set to face a host of tricky opponents, starting tonight against Real Betis, a team currently on a run of six back-to-back wins in La Liga.
The Real Betis game will be followed by an away game against Leganes and a couple of home games against Celta Vigo and Mallorca before the Catalans travel to Real Valladolid.
