FLW takes a look at Mateo Joseph's wages as West Ham eye up a potential move for the Leeds forward.

Mateo Joseph has endured a lessened role at Leeds United in the second half of 2024-25, but that hasn't stopped links emerging about his future.

The 21-year-old made a sensational breakthrough last season for the Whites, scoring twice in an FA Cup fifth-round tie against Chelsea. For many of the Elland Road faithful, he quickly became a player they expected to see as a regular starter this season and although he has made 37 league appearances, the majority of these have been as a substitute.

Yet, according to reports from ExWHUEmployee via The West Ham Way, Joseph, alongside his compatriot Ethan Ampadu, is reportedly on West Ham United's radar.

The Hammers have endured a torrid campaign in the Premier League and will be looking to make several younger changes to the squad next summer. Joseph would certainly fall into this category and while he has failed to hit the heights expected of him this campaign, he still has heaps of promise.

With this potential transfer in mind, Football League World have used Capology's wage estimation system to gauge how much Joseph earns at Elland Road and what wage hike he could expect moving to the London Stadium.

What Leeds United are paying Mateo Joseph per week

Back in January 2022, Joseph joined up with Leeds from Espanyol for a fee believed to be in the region of €1 million.

It took him some time to establish himself as a first-team regular, but last season he made a notable impression, leading to him signing a new contract in January 2024 that will keep him at the club until 2028.

The weekly wage on this deal is estimated to be in the region of £15,000 - a healthy figure for a player who has just entered his 20's.

Across a season, this earns the Spanish youth international a salary of £780,000.

Compared to his Leeds teammates, he is one of the lower paid players at the club. Below him, you have Isaac Schmidt on £10,000 per week and Alex Cairns on £5,000 per week. Meanwhile, four other players earn the same as Joseph, including Championship top scorer Joel Piroe and Bulgarian midfielder Ilia Gruev.

At the top of the list are the players who were part of Leeds' squad the last time they were in the Premier League, with Patrick Bamford earning £70,000 every seven days and Junior Firpo £60,000.

Mateo Joseph's potential West Ham wage compared to current Hammers players

To estimate Joseph's potential wage at the Hammers, we have compared him to players in a similar age bracket or those who may occupy a similar role in the squad.

As the 21-year-old is unlikely to arrive as a starter, it would be more appropriate to consider players whom Capology classifies as 'reserves'.

Last summer, we saw Crysencio Summerville make a similar move to the one Joseph might make, as he swapped Elland Road for the London Stadium.

The Dutchman's current weekly wage at West Ham is £30,000, while fellow potential star winger Luis Guilherme, aged 18, earns £25,000 per week.

It is reasonable to assume that while Joseph's wage will likely increase, it would not Summerville's figure. A middle ground of £27,500 per week would be a fair estimate for the Spaniard.

Over the course of a season, this would earn him £1.43 million – nearly double the amount he currently earns at Elland Road.

This move not only makes sense for his playing prospects but also for his financial security, with Joseph likely to enjoy a substantial wage increase at the Hammers.
