Hummels calls Bilbao “the worst mistake I ever made.” | OneFootball

Mats Hummels reflected on his costly red card in Roma’s recent elimination from Europa League at the hands of Athletic Bilbao.

In his own podcast, Alleine ist schwer, the German veteran called the incident “the worst mistake” of his career.

“It was terrible to stay in the locker room, hoping that the team could overcome my mistake.”

“I knew that each of my teammates would have to run more because of me. The following days were really difficult.”

“Reviewing the images on TV, it is even clearer that that pass should not have been made.”

”I don’t think it was direct red, since the episode took place a few metres from our half of the field. A yellow would have been more appropriate and I don’t think the VAR would have turned it into a red.”

On his teammates’ reaction he remarked, “Rarely have I seen a team react so well to such a situation.”
