BVB manager Niko Kovač made his routine Friday press conference ahead of the weekend encounter against Mainz 05 at the Signal Iduna Park on Sunday. The Croat delivered some positive notes on his players' conditioning following the international break.
For the Sunday match, BVB will have the return of Daniel Svensson, who has recovered from a knee ligament injury that originated from a reckless tackle in the Champions League first leg game against LOSC Lille. The Swede will be available again for selection and will be on the bench as an option for Ramy Bensebaini at the left-back position.
On another positive note, Carney Chukwuemeka is also fully fit and should be an option for Kovač as well. However, the BVB manager, who is a great fan of the young Brit, has stated that Carney is not 90 minutes ready yet, which means he will probably start on the bench.
However, Felix Nmecha, who has been away from the team since a ligament injury that occurred at the end of January, is still unavailable for the squad against Mainz 05. The German international is on the final stages of his recovery, so Kovač optimistically believes that Nmecha will be ready to feature on the bench against Freiburg on April 5th.
With those injury updates, the only unavoidable absence from the squad will be Marcel Sabitzer, who suffered a knee injury prior to the international break against RB Leipzig. Other absences are from the youngsters Marcel Lotka, Filippo Mané, and Cole Campbell ahead of an important next few weeks for BVB with Champions League football and the challenging mission to conquer a European spot in the league.
