Inter Milan have seen their attack falter to an out-and-out crisis at the worst possible moment of the season.

Today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews, are unsparing in their analysis of the Nerazzurri’s attack. They compare the team to infamous Olympian Dorando Pietri.

Inter Milan went yet another match without a goal against Roma yesterday evening.

The Nerazzurri had one or two decent chances. But the balance of the opportunities certainly fell to the Giallorossi.

Inter spent much of the second half of the match probing for opportunities.

However, there was a feeling that the Nerazzurri just lacked the precision around the penalty area to truly open Roma up.

Inter Milan had also failed to score against either Bologna or AC Milan in their previous two matches.

The stark reality is that this simply does not look like the same team that has had the most prolific attack in Serie A for much of the campaign.

The signs were perhaps there already against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

After a first leg in which Inter were at their swashbuckling best, in the second leg the Nerazzurri could only muster a few sustained periods of attacking thrust.

It was two goals from set pieces that saw Inter eliminate the German champions-elect from Europe.

And since then, Inter have been unable to recover their attacking prowess.

The Gazzetta compare the tired-looking Inter to Italian Olympian Dorando Pietri.

At the men’s marathon of the 1908 Olympics, Pietri had made a dominant surge over the second half of the race.

However, this exertion of energy cost Pietri dearly right at the end of the race.

The Italian competitors stumbled several times, needing to be helped back up as he simply had no more has left in the tank.

In front of goal, the Gazzetta, Inter look as though they can very much sympathize with Pietri’s plight.
