The footballing journey of Darwin Nunez at Liverpool has been marked by unfulfilled potential and inconsistency in his struggling performances. Despite arriving with high expectations, Nunez has struggled to find his form, scoring just seven goals and providing five assists over the season. With limited starts and numerous substitute appearances, his future at Anfield appears uncertain.
Reports from Turkey, specifically from the outlet Aksam, suggest that Nunez may soon be plying his trade at Fenerbahce under the watchful eye of Jose Mourinho. Aksam’s coverage hints at a proactive move by the Turkish club to rejuvenate their attacking options, highlighting their intent to replace ageing stars with fresher legs. “Fenerbahçe, who will start the new season with Technical Director Jose Mourinho, has determined Darwin Nunez as the biggest target of the summer months,” they report.

Liverpool’s readiness to part ways with Nunez is evident, with the club reportedly setting a price tag significantly lower than his original cost. The potential €30 million move would mark a considerable loss, reflecting the club’s desperation to move on from this unsuccessful chapter. Interest in Nunez isn’t limited to Fenerbahce, with Premier League clubs like Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United also monitoring the situation. However, the allure of working under Mourinho at a club hungry for success like Fenerbahce might sway Nunez’s decision.
Mourinho’s interest in Nunez is a key aspect of this potential transfer. Known for his tactical prowess and ability to revitalise players’ careers, Mourinho’s Fenerbahce could offer Nunez the perfect platform to rediscover his form. “Since Jose Mourinho also likes the player very much, Fenerbahçe is expected to push all the conditions for this transfer in the summer months,” according to Aksam. This move could benefit both parties, with Nunez seeking redemption and Fenerbahce aiming to dethrone their Istanbul rivals, Galatasaray.
For Liverpool, offloading Nunez would not only free up funds but also allow them to recalibrate their attacking options under Arne Slot, who took over after Jurgen Klopp’s departure in May 2024. This transition period could be crucial for the club as they aim to rebuild and adapt to Slot’s vision and tactical approach.

As a Liverpool supporter, it’s hard not to feel disappointed about Darwin Nunez’s tenure at the club. Arriving with such promise, his lacklustre performances have been a significant letdown. Seeing him linked with a move away for a fraction of what he was brought in for is frustrating, yet perhaps necessary. The financial hit we’re taking on him is a bitter pill to swallow.
Under Arne Slot, we need players who can consistently deliver and fit into a tactical system that’s still taking shape. Nunez’s departure might be best for all involved, allowing Liverpool to invest in someone who can contribute more effectively. While it’s sad to see a potential talent like Nunez not work out, sometimes a fresh start is what’s best for both player and club.
