Fabio Paratici’s move to AC Milan seemed to be done, with only the final formalities required. However, the club made a shock U-turn last week.

In a season where nothing has been normal, the events with Paratici make little sense, but also complete sense. Throughout this year, there have been twists and turns at every stage, and this has meant following Milan has been difficult to keep up with at times.

At the start of last week, the director had effectively agreed to join the club, and by the end of it, there was a new favourite to take the job. It’s never straightforward.

There have been a few reasons why the club had to look elsewhere for a new sporting director. Interestingly, Matteo Moretto stated that new information had come to light about the director’s situation, and this caused the turnaround.

Today, this information has been supported by Corriere dello Sport editor Ivan Zazzaroni, via Football Italia.

Paratici’s contract was ready. He had it in his hands, but there was strong pressure, even on a federal level. I want to say this very clearly: Paratici must not return to Italy, but I don’t understand why. Surely, he made errors, he was punished, and the ban ends on July 20. One who has been suspended can no longer work in Italy. They should just add a note and state it very clearly.”
