Alexander-Arnold set to leave Liverpool as a free agent and join Spanish giants

Trent Alexander-Arnold is believed to be closing in on a move to Real Madrid, but it is their big rivals who he once revealed he had a soft spot for.

The right-back is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season and appears increasingly likely to leave on a free transfer, with Real Madrid hoping to wrap up a deal.

Alexander-Arnold has been strongly linked with the Spanish giants over the past 18 months and with no contract extension agreed at Anfield, he is free to make a summer exit.

However, while the 26-year-old is expected to be playing at the Bernabeu next season, he suggested in an interview in 2020 that Barcelona was the club he most admired outside of Liverpool.

“I’d say my favourite other team would be Barça,” Alexander-Arnold told GQ.

“I feel as though they’ve got kind of the same values and beliefs as Liverpool.”

In that same interview, Alexander-Arnold said he could imagine himself staying at Liverpool for his whole career, having come through the academy at his boyhood club.

The defender was also asked about the possibility of one day playing in Spain, which he played down as he spoke of his love for Liverpool.

“It’s not something I’ve ever really thought about,” Alexander-Arnold said.

“I’ve always loved Liverpool. I’ve always supported them. I’ve always played for them. So, I’ve never had that reason to think about it. Yeah, still now, I wouldn’t sit there in my room and daydream about playing somewhere else.

“Right now, I’m a Liverpool player. I love the club more than anything. I love everything about it. I love the fans, the people. I love the city. So, no, why would I think about that? “
