The Merseyside Derby is always one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season, but this meeting carries extra weight for Liverpool. After falling to a disappointing 1-2 defeat against Newcastle United in the EFL Cup final before the international break, Arne Slot’s men returned to Premier League action knowing they must respond. With just nine league games remaining leading into this encounter and a 9-point lead at the top of the table, the focus remained firmly on securing a historic 20th English league title.
Everton, meanwhile, arrived at Anfield in strong form, unbeaten in their last nine league matches under David Moyes. While four consecutive draws had slowed their climb up the table, their defensive resilience has made them a difficult side to break down. As always, they were eager to disrupt Liverpool’s title charge, making this a high-stakes encounter for both teams.
For Liverpool, the need to bounce back is not just about local bragging rights—it’s about momentum. The defeat at Wembley was a setback, but with their dominant league position, Slot’s side has the perfect opportunity to reset and push toward the finish line. With key players returning from international duty and Anfield able to provide its usual electric atmosphere, the stage was set for a crucial battle under the lights.
In a match that often produces drama, individual moments can define the outcome. And on a night when Liverpool needed a response, one player stepped up and delivered a performance worthy of the occasion. Luis Díaz was relentlessly attacking and always the outlet of choice that drove continually at a team designed to stop offensively minded players. With South American guile and want to win, the Columbian flyer was able to produce the assist for Diogo Jota’s winner and drive forward continually through a solid outing.
Next up is a trip to Craven Cottage where the Reds will continue their gallop toward their 20th English League crown. The stutter has ended and now the Premier League title is the target from now until May.
This Merseyside victory and extension of a wonderful lead at the top of the table was tremendous and hopefully the remainder of the campaign can be rewarded with a trophy lift in a few weeks time. A second half display was the perfect example of how to win silverware and was shown by this evenings man of the match.
Steven Smith’s Pre-match Prediction;
