Manchester City will continue their bid to secure Champions League football for next season when they travel to derby rivals Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday at 4:30pm.
Man City (4-2-3-1): Ederson; Nunes, Dias, Gvardiol, O’Reilly; Gundogan, Silva; Savinho, De Bruyne, Silva; Marmoush.
City ended their two-game Premier League winless streak with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Leicester last time out, thanks to first-half goals from Jack Grealish and Omar Marmoush.
Jack Grealish will be thrilled with his early goal against Leicester, but in reality, the chances of him starting the derby are low given how much of a peripheral figure he’s become this season.
Instead, you can expect Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden all to return to the starting line-up in this match after they were rested against the Foxes, while Mateo Kovacic will also be pushing for minutes after sitting that match out.
Nico O’Reilly has proven to be an unexpected game-changer at left-back and will be fuming if he is dropped against Man Utd.
City are without star striker Erling Haaland until May, but Omar Marmoush has scored in each of his last three appearances across all competitions and will be a considerable threat leading the line.
Kevin De Bruyne has a strong record in the Manchester derby, losing just seven of his 20 meetings with Manchester United, while notching three goals and six assists, with all but one of those goal contributions coming since the start of 2022. He’s become a bigger threat to Man Utd the more he’s aged.
However, we now know that this will be his last Manchester derby, with De Bruyne announcing this week that he’ll be leaving the Etihad at the end of the season.
De Bruyne leaves with 14 major honours under his belt and still has the chance to add a couple more in the form of the FA Cup and FIFA Club World Cup — the latter only if City can keep him around beyond his contract expiry on June 30th.
But how he would also love to give one final parting gift to Manchester United, who are languishing in 13th place. And beyond any narratives, Pep Guardiola needs a big performance from his talisman, with City still fifth, only a point ahead of Newcastle and one behind Chelsea.
