Ruben Amorim has ruled out Diogo Dalot from Manchester United’s upcoming fixtures with a calf injury.
The defender is set to miss the next few weeks and possibly the rest of the season, Amorim said ahead of United’s clash with Bournemouth on Sunday.
“There is that possibility [he will miss the remainder of the season] but I don’t know,” the United boss said. “We will check week by week because he works really hard. He can recover quite well, so we’ll see.
“He has something in his muscle in his calf. He had a sequence of games where he played all the time. We try to manage [that] but the players play a lot of minutes and are not so ready to cope with that. Dalot felt something.”
Dalot joins Lisandro Martinez, Joshua Zirkzee, Amad Diallo, Matthijs de Lijt and Ayden Heaven on the Red Devils’ injury list.
Following Dalot’s exclusion and ahead of their visit to Bournemouth on Sunday, Amorim also provided updates on fellow defenders de Lijt and Ayden Heaven, as well as winger Amad.
“Amad is near, Matthijs is near, but the rest is at the same pace. Ayden is not ready.”
With so many defenders on the sidelines, Amorim admits the visit to Bournemouth poses an extra challenge: “The focus is that we have to face it, we need to have that feeling that every game here is important. We have to win every game. We are going to face this game with the best team, we’ve had a full week to prepare.”
“It’s a team that press a lot who have something to fight for with Europe. We know the quality of the squad, the manager, the way they press, the one against ones.”
With the first leg of two of the Europa League semi-final coming against Athletic Bilbao on Thursday 1 May, the Portuguese boss spoke about the importance of retaining focus on the Premier League for now.
“I don’t talk about Bilbao during the week, I just focus on Bournemouth,” he said. “The way they perform against Bournemouth can change my mind for the next match. In our last game we were the better team, it was tough to deal with that loss, so we need to win.”
