Manchester United’s season has unraveled fast and with their Premier League campaign all but over, the focus has firmly shifted to what comes next. Sitting 13th in the table in April, hopes of qualifying for Europe through the league are fading quickly.
Their only real shot at Champions League football next season is by winning the Europa League. But even that would be little more than a bandage on the gaping wounds at Old Trafford. From attack to defence, and now between the posts, Ruben Amorim is expected to make sweeping changes this summer.
And in a surprising twist, the club could be preparing to undo one of their boldest decisions from last year.
According to reports from Fichajes, Manchester United are exploring the possibility of bringing back David De Gea, a year after he was shown the exit door at Old Trafford. The Spanish goalkeeper parted ways with the club in 2023 following a breakdown in contract negotiations, bringing an end to a 12-year spell in Manchester.
His replacement, Andre Onana, was brought in from Inter Milan for €55 million but has endured a nightmare debut season. High-profile errors have marred his performances and he was recently dropped by Amorim after his latest mistake in the Europa League against Lyon.
Now, with the goalkeeper position once again a cause for concern, United may look to a familiar face to steady the ship.
After spending nearly a year without a club, De Gea signed with Fiorentina in August 2024. The 33-year-old has impressed in Serie A and his form has reportedly caught the attention of his former employers once again.
His current contract in Italy expires in June, though Fiorentina are said to be preparing a one-year extension. Still, De Gea could be available on a free — a detail that will surely appeal to a United side that desperately needs stability in goal without further financial risks.
