Andre Onana’s performances have been far from satisfactory with the Cameroonian committing high-profile errors both in the Premier League and Europa League.
In fact, his growing catalogue of mistakes has Manchester United officials worried with Ruben Amorim far from pleased.
Ideally, he would prefer a change, but given the limited transfer budget and multiple positions in need of urgent reinforcements, the ex-Ajax star’s position is safe for now.
That could change in case the Red Devils clinch the Europa League, which is why multiple options are being kept ready including Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel.
Much like his club, the Swiss ace has also struggled this season, keeping a mere 10 clean-sheets in all competitions as opposed to 14 he kept last season and 15 the year before.
The Bundesliga giants want to keep a hold of him, and he still has three years left on his current deal but English giants like Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and the 20-time English league champions are all interested.
Which is why, as a precautionary step, Dortmund have slapped a €50 million price tag on their No 1 to ward off potential suitors.
But Niko Kovac’s men are currently seventh, four points off Champions League qualification and should they miss out, English clubs could take advantage and acquire the “colossal” Switzerland international on a cut-price fee.
BVB will have no option but to sell their big names, which is why English clubs are currently lying in wait, ready to take advantage of the German club’s precarious situation.
“Borussia Dortmund’s goalkeeper Gregor Kobel is set to become a hot commodity during the upcoming summer transfer window. Several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have all expressed interest in the Swiss international.
“According to Caught Offside sources, with Dortmund setting a price tag of €50-55 million (£43-47 million) for their goalkeeper, the English clubs are treading carefully and are exploring alternative targets to avoid paying the full asking price.
“Rather than rushing into a big-money deal, these clubs are leveraging Dortmund’s current situation. Dortmund’s uncertainty about securing a Champions League place next season could weaken their negotiating stance.
“A failure to qualify for Europe’s elite competition would almost certainly force Dortmund into a summer sale of key players, including Kobel, potentially at a reduced fee.”
Irrespective of Onana’s situation, United are preparing a revamp of their goalkeeping contingent with multiple Championship stars on their radar to replace Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton.
