Newcastle United’s 70-year wait for a major trophy finally came to an end on Sunday, deservedly coming out victorious against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium. A first-half header from local lad Dan Burn was followed up by the inevitable Alexander Isak to give the Magpies a two-goal lead before Federico Chiesa grabbed a late consolation goal for Arne Slot’s side.
However, it was an Eddie Howe ‘masterstroke’ that was the the major difference between the two sides as revealed by a former Premier League manager.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa boss Tim Sherwood spoke exclusively to EPL Index and shared his thoughts on Newcastle United’s historic victory…
“I thought Newcastle deserved it and they absolutely dominated Liverpool for the whole game,” began Sherwood, “They managed to keep Salah quiet, not just through Tino Livramento, but through the whole team by stopping the ball at source.”
“In the midfield area, they were absolutely magnificent,” continued Sherwood, “Tonali has been brilliant since he come back but what Eddie Howe has done with Joelinton has been nothing short of an absolute masterstroke.”

“To take him from a failed centre-forward and make him into a giant in the middle of the park that can do absolutely everything, is hugely impressive.”
The Brazilian was nothing short of spectacular on Sunday – winning seven of his nine ground duels, two of his four aerial duels, making three tackles, two clearances and one interception.
Sherwood also pointed out that the incredible work-rate of Joelinton, along with the ‘magic’ of Bruno Guimaraes makes it one of the most daunting midfields in the country and ultimately that was where the game was won.
“We must give credit for Eddie for the way that he set his side up perfectly,” continued Sherwood, “I’m not sure that they necessarily wanted it more than Liverpool, but they had an off-day and we have to credit Newcastle for punishing them.”
Howe has come under pressure from some sections of the Newcastle United fanbase over recent months, but with a trophy finally in the cabinet and the prospect of UEFA Champions League football next season still lingering – I think it’s fair to say he will be safe.
Sherwood was also keen to credit Liverpool too, saying: “Liverpool have been magnificent all season, let’s not forget that and it has just been a bad week for them. Newcastle thoroughly deserved to win.”
