The injury problems continue to mount for Real Madrid as after confirming blows to Ferland Mendy and Antonio Rudiger earlier today, the Spanish giants have now revealed that David Alaba has also been sidelined with a knee injury.

“Following tests performed on our player David Alaba by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a tear of the internal meniscus in his left knee,” the statement from the club read.

Alaba came back from an ACL injury in January after over a year out on the sidelines but had looked far from his best in the subsequent weeks.

The Austrian international had to be taken off at half-time during the La Liga game against Getafe last week and was an unused substitute against Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday.

Alaba did not train with the rest of the group on Tuesday and it has now been confirmed that he has sustained a tear in the meniscus of his left knee.

Another surgery for Alaba

Building on that, journalist Arancha Rodriguez reports that Alaba will now undergo surgery to address his latest knee injury, meaning he will now miss the remaining five matches in the 2024/25 season.

However, the report from the journalist adds that Real Madrid expect the Austrian international to recover in time for the FIFA Club World Cup set to begin in mid-June, suggesting that he could be out for around six weeks.

Alaba’s injury now means that Carlo Ancelotti is left with only Raul Asencio and Jesus Vallejo as the first-team centre-backs in the squad, with Aurelien Tchouameni capable of filling in if needed.

After all, Eder Militao and Rudiger are both out along with full-backs Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy while Eduardo Camavinga’s season is also over.

The manager could also turn to academy talents like Jacobo Ramon and Diego Aguado to provide depth in the position.
