Following the retirement of Manuel Neuer and injury to Marc-André ter Stegen, Oliver Baumann (Hoffenheim) and Alexander Nübel (Stuttgart) have shared Germany’s No. 1 position.
But according to Kicker, Baumann will be Germany’s No. 1 for the foreseeable future. The Hoffenheim goalkeeper started in UEFA Nations League wins against the Netherlands (1-0) and Bosnia and Herzegovina (7-0), while Nübel started against Hungary (1-1) in their last fixture.
Baumann has since been awarded the No. 1 jersey for their upcoming games against Italy, with Nübel becoming second choice (number 12 jersey) and Manchester City’s Stefan Ortega (number 21) a third option.
Julian Nagelsmann initially kept his cards close to his chest but, per Kicker, after a rescheduled meeting the DFB released the shirt number.
Baumann missed six games for Hoffenheim this season with plantar fasciitis but has impressed on his return, keeping a clean sheet against Bochum and a strong performance in their 1-1 draw with Heidenheim. But the 34-year-old was at fault for St. Pauli’s only goal against TSG last weekend.
