Rotherham United have endured a disappointing campaign back in League One.
The Millers suffered relegation last season, and supporters were hoping that the club could bounce back and compete for at least a top six finish this year.
However, Steve Evans’ side have struggled and are someway off the pace of the promotion challengers.
With only a couple of months remaining in the season, the club are in a position where they’ve got little left to play for in the final games.
When asked for an unpopular opinion related to the club, FLW’s Rotherham fan pundit Tom Eyre claimed that owner Tony Stewart gets more flak from supporters than is warranted.
He believes that Stewart has made right decisions, but that the appointment of Evans, and the recruitment that followed, is what led to their disappointing campaign.
“I believe a lot of the fanbase are on common ground with how Rotherham are at the minute, and I think a lot of the opinions I may have are popular,” Eyre told Football League World.
“But one thing I’d say that is potentially an unpopular opinion is the whole mess that we’re in. I don’t think it’s as much Tony Stewart’s problem as people believe.
“I think he was going in the right direction. He was hiring a director of football. You had Leam Richardson, who had previously won League One, and things were going kind of up.
“And I think the fault, and where the error lies, is the hiring of Steve Evans.
“And I think Steve Evans’ subsequent recruitment is what’s put the club in the situation that they’re in.
“So, yes, it’s his fault, and it’s not a good look for him, but overall the blame lies more with the recruitment side and Steve Evans than people would like to admit.”
Rotherham are currently 14th in the League One table, 16 points behind the play-off places.
Rotherham have the resources to turn things around and be more competitive in League One.
However, if they continue to struggle in mid-table under Evans that Stewart will come under greater and greater criticism.
This summer could be a good opportunity for a reset, with more work needed on recruitment.
If Rotherham can get on top of these issues, then there’s no reason why they can’t get back to competing nearer the top of the League One table in the future.
