Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor says that her side’s mindset remains the same going into the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final tie with Manchester City.

The Blues travel to The Joie Stadium this evening to face The Cityzens in the second of four consecutive fixtures against the same opponent.

Chelsea defeated Manchester City 2-1 in the Subway Women’s League Cup final on Saturday. While their UEFA Women’s Champions League tie will be played out over two legs, Bompastor says that her side’s mindset will not change from Saturday’s game.

“The game is in a different competition and the context will be different with these two legs but our mindset stays the same,” Bompastor said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We need to put all of the elements into the game to have a big chance to win.

“It’s two legs but this game is really important. We are playing away but we have the same mindset in terms of attacking the game.”

Bompastor went on to say that Chelsea have reviewed the previous game against Manchester City and they know where they can improve this evening.

She said “We had a really good review with the players and we know exactly how we want to attack the game. We always try to play the best, so our mindset will be to attack the game and control it a little bit more. The players are confident going into the game and they know what they need to do.”

Chelsea’s crazy four-game schedule against Manchester City is being played out over 12 days. The hectic nature of the calendar will put strain on Bompastor’s squad but she says that every player is ready to be called upon.

She said “I’m lucky enough to have a really good squad with a lot of talent and quality. It’s really important for me to involve everyone in these four games, especially because at some point, we will need to have some freshness. It could be something that’s really important.

“It’s good to have depth in the squad, talent and quality for me to be able to involve everyone, to give the opportunity to every player to compete in these games. My job is to make sure that I pick the right starting XI in every game. Also, having game-changers on the bench who can finish the game, bring energy and help us perform is really important.

“It’s a team performance. It’s not just about the players that start, it’s about the ones on the bench that can bring the right mindset and energy to the game.”

Chelsea’s UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final, first leg fixture at Manchester City kicks-off at 8pm this evening.
