With little more than two months of the Premier League season remaining, it’s unlikely that anything too surprising is going to happen — but that doesn’t mean that everything’s done and dusted.
England’s top division has earned a reputation for being the best league in the world precisely because it’s impossible to take anything for granted; in other words, it’s not over until it’s over.
The league table may have a well-defined shape, but there are still plenty of matters yet to be decided. Let’s take a look at five of the big questions that are still unanswered.
OK, this one isn’t too much of a mystery. As it stands, Liverpool are on course to win the league in Arne Slot’s first season as manager.
Still, every Liverpool fan knows that anything can happen right until things have been signed, sealed, and delivered. Having narrowly missed out on multiple league titles during Klopp’s reign, the ease with which Liverpool have navigated this year’s campaign can seem a little suspicious.
Happily for Liverpool, it’s Arteta’s Arsenal, not Guardiola’s Manchester City, who are tasked with chasing them down. With the Gunners out of practice in winning league titles, Slot and his team will be confident that they can hold off the challenge to claim their 20th league title.
If Liverpool win the league title, it will be thanks, in large part, to the contributions of Mohamed Salah, who has been deadly in front of goal all season. His average of around a goal a game means that, as it stands, it’s likely Salah will be adding the Premier League Golden Boot as well as a league title medal to his trophy cabinet come May.
But that’s far from a foregone conclusion. While the latest EPL odds have Salah as favourite to end the campaign with the most goals, previous Golden Boot winner Erling Haaland isn’t too far behind. While Manchester City’s season has been a bit of a failure, it’s not ridiculous to think that Haaland will go on one of his long scoring streaks, especially since he has games against relegation-threatened teams Leicester City, Wolves, and Southampton to look forward to.
We know that Southampton will be going down. Having won only two league games all season, they’re on course to have one of the all-time worst Premier League league performances in history.
What is less clear is which teams will be joining them in the Championship. Leicester, Ipswich, and Wolves are all in jeopardy. Of the three, Wolves will be most confident that they can avoid the drop. They’re already a few points ahead of both Ipswich and Leicester and have more favourable fixtures in the run-in.
Still, the threat of being relegated can do weird things to a team, so you never know what might happen.
The coveted Champions League places are still up for grabs. Liverpool and Arsenal will almost certainly finish in the top two places, but what about the other two spots below?
Manchester City, pre-season favourites to win the league, are in a dangerous position. They’ll need to find a way to overcome Chelsea and Nottingham Forest, the latter of whom have proven to be the season’s highly welcome surprise package. Newcastle will also have faint ambitions that they can claw their way into the top four just in time for the season’s end.
In truth, it’s essentially impossible to predict which clubs will be representing England in next year’s Champions League, though logic would suggest that Manchester City will probably do enough to squeeze in there.
