Southampton fans must have taken a nostalgic FA Cup trip by watching James Ward-Prowse's remarkable free-kicks in the competition's history.
Since the previous few days, the dust has finally started to settle on one of Southampton's most worrying international breaks ever. And a decent gap leading to the Premier League can be considered as a slight compensation for the club's stressful days.
Expectedly, the Saints are delighted at the moment and their elation has been taken to cloud nine by the coming weekend's schedule. Well, if you didn't take notice, the FA Cup is returning for the quarter-final rounds.
Honestly, what could be a better occasion than this to enjoy footballing action without taking the anxiety that comes with a Southampton matchday? Now, I am not downplaying the Saints but we know how agonizing the current season has turned out to be for the club.
Still, the FA Cup hasn't been a pain point for Southampton and the Saints have regularly fared well in the competition.
On this stage, James Ward-Prowse has often emerged as one of Southampton's prolific difference-makers whenever the on-field situation has tested the Saints. Admiring his greatness, BBC Sport has also included him while shortlisting the best free-kicks delivered in FA Cup's rich history.
While this compliment is indeed massive, Southampton fans wouldn't be surprised even a little. The reason being that the 30-year-old's free-kick genius doesn't need any introduction among both Saints as well as the entire Premier League fanbase.
Ward-Prowse has proven his set-piece mettle in English football during the previous decade and he can arguably be concluded as the greatest player in this regard.
Sadly, we will not be able to see him pull off another iconic free-kick tomorrow because his current club has already been eliminated from the FA Cup. Still, let's remain hopeful that we get to see a few praiseworthy free-kicks and thrilling Cup games this week.
