How many different English clubs are winning trophies these days, compared to the past?
Is it one of those things where your mind deceives you?
You know, as you get older, you have these ideas in your head that when you actually look at the facts, turn out not to be the reality.
For me, it feels like far fewer English clubs now share the trophies.
Curiosity got the better of me and I had to check it out.
I looked at domestic trophies and there are three major ones to be won each year, the Premier League, FA Cup and League Cup.
I looked at three different eras.
The trophies won 1977 to 1992, 1993 to 2008, 2009 to 2024.
Three different trophies, sixteen years, so that makes it 48 trophies to be won in each 16 year era.
From 2009 to 2024, 16 seasons, the English clubs that won the 48 major domestic trophies on offer:
17 Man City (6 League Cup, 3 FA Cup, 8 Premier League)
9 Man U (4 League Cup, 2 FA Cup, 3 Premier League)

4 Arsenal (4 FA Cup)
2 Leicester (1 FA Cup, 1 Premier League)
1 Swansea (1 League Cup)
1 Birmingham (1 League Cup)
1 Wigan (1 FA Cup)
From 1993 to 2008, 16 seasons, the English clubs that won the 48 major domestic trophies on offer:
15 Man U (1 League Cup, 4 FA Cup, 10 Premier League)
9 Arsenal (1 League Cup, 5 FA Cup, 3 Premier League)

2 Villa (2 League Cup)
2 Leicester (2 League Cup)
2 Tottenham (2 League Cup)
1 Everton (1 FA Cup)
1 Portsmouth (1 FA Cup)
1 Middlesbrough (1 League Cup)
From 1977 to 1992, 16 seasons, the English clubs that won the 48 major domestic trophies on offer:
16 Liverpool (4 League Cup, 3 FA Cup, 9 Premier League)
5 Forest (4 League Cup, 1 Premier League)

1 Luton (1 League Cup)
1 Oxford (1 League Cup)

Conclusions
So from 1977-1992 you had 17 different English clubs sharing the 48 available trophies.
That then became from 1993-2008 you had 11 different English clubs sharing the 48 available trophies.
Then finally, from 2009-2024 you have had only 9 different English clubs sharing the 48 available trophies.
The direction of travel is very clear.
In each of these three eras you have had a dominant club, with Liverpool winning 16 trophies (1977-1992), Man U 15 trophies (1993-2008) and then Man City 17 trophies (2009-2024. These three clubs in their respective eras including 9, 10 and 8 Premier League wins.
However, what has really changed, is that an ever smaller group of English clubs are controlling the trophies overall in each era.
This is especially when it comes to the two cup competitions.
There were 17 different English clubs winning one or more cups between 1977 and 1992, with then that becoming only 9 different English clubs from 2009 to 2024.
