The Reds face The Blues at Kingsmeadow on Saturday afternoon. Liverpool are yet to concede a goal in this season’s competition while they caused an upset by knocking Arsenal out in the quarter-finals.
When speaking to the media in the pre-match press conference, Liverpool’s interim boss Whiteley said that her side go to Chelsea with confidence off the back of a couple of big performances and that the Merseysiders can cause their opponents problems.
“We’ve taken real good confidence from that quarter-final against Arsenal and in the league against Manchester United too,” Whiteley said. “We’ve shown that we can compete against the top teams. If we execute our game plan, we can cause Chelsea problems on the day.”
Chelsea have been in top form all season, however, recent draws against Brighton & Hove Albion and West Ham United have shown that The Blues are not invincible. Whiteley says that Liverpool can take learnings and confidence from those surprise results.
She said “You take learnings from those games for sure. Sonia [Bompastor] has done a brilliant job since going in at Chelsea. They were already a successful side but she has taken them to another level again.
“We have to look at the teams that have taken points off them in recent games and take learnings from those games. It definitely gives you the confidence and belief that we can go there and do the same.”
It has been eight years since Liverpool last featured in an Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-final while they haven’t been finalists for almost three decades. It is an exciting time for the club but Whiteley says that all eyes are on Saturday’s game.
She said “It’s a really exciting prospect being one game away from Wembley and that’s the incentive for definite. The full focus has to be on the game and the task in-hand.
“It’s the first time we’ve been in a semi-final in eight years, so that’s an achievement in itself but we want to put absolutely everything into it on Saturday and give ourselves the best chance of progressing to the final.”
Liverpool’s Adobe Women’s FA Cup semi-final tie at Chelsea kicks-off at 12.15pm on Saturday afternoon.
