Ahead of the summer, it has always appeared that Manchester City’s summer transfer plans were obvious. There is an obvious need to add more creativity in midfield for Pep Guardiola’s side. The need to add a full-back or possibly two is also clear to see. With Ederson appearing likely to leave the club this summer, Manchester City will also likely need to sign a quality goalkeeper as well. But now a new report has provided clarity on what Manchester City’s summer transfer plans could be.
Sam Lee has reported for The Athletic that Manchester City are set for a busy summer transfer window. Lee reports that City are planning to sign a goalkeeper, creative midfielders and a full-back. Furthermore, Lee reports that City are hoping to sign four of five players this summer. It is also reported by Lee that a move for Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White is a possibility, and Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz is a target for Manchester City. Lastly, Lee reports that Manchester City are also determined to reduce their wage bill at the end of the season.
This summer is a crucial one for Manchester City. They began their rebuild during the January transfer window. Now the next step of that process is set to begin at the end of this season. Sam Lee’s report shows that reducing their wage bill is a priority for Manchester City. They have begun that process with Kevin De Bruyne set to leave the club this summer. Players such as John Stones, Bernardo Silva, Ederson and Jack Grealish could also potentially leave as City look to trim their wage bill. There could potentially be more players that could depart City this summer.
The exciting part is as one era ends at Manchester City another is set to begin. As per Sam Lee’s report four or five players could arrive at the club this summer. That will signal a new era at the club. Morgan Gibbs-White and Florian Wirtz are two players who are considered two of City’s main summer targets. Interestingly, Sam Lee also reports that City could be looking at players with experience and who play key roles at their current clubs. Who they could be remains to be seen.
There now appears to be clarity around Manchester City’s summer transfer plans. It is a massive summer for the club as they bid to return to the top of Premier League and once again contend in the Champions League. If they get this summer right that could happen as soon as next season. So it will be fascinating to watch the summer transfer window unfold to see who leaves and departs Manchester City as they continue their rebuild.
