Football League World looks at how much each Viktor Gyokeres goal cost Coventry City
Coventry City gambled on Viktor Gyokeres back in the summer of 2021 and reaped the rewards, with a goal-laden two-year stint at the CBS Arena setting up the Swede for superstardom with Sporting CP.
The Sky Blues took a clear risk when they decided to cough up a reported £1 million fee to Brighton and Hove Albion to make Gyokeres' stay in the West Midlands a permanent one after a loan spell in the second-half of the 2020/21 season yielded just three goals from 19 appearances.
Mark Robins, however, saw something in Gyokeres that few others did at the time. Coventry's show of faith soon came to fruition as the speedy frontman scored for fun in each of his two campaigns contracted with the Sky Blues before earning a big-money move to Sporting after the side's play-off final defeat to Luton Town in May 2023.
Gyokeres, of course, has transformed into a global sensation since moving to the Portuguese capital.
Now aged 26, Gyokeres has scored more than 80 goals in under 100 appearances for Sporting and his performances, especially in the UEFA Champions League after returning six strikes from eight outings this term, have resulted in links to just about every leading club across Europe.
Whether it's Arsenal, Barcelona or Paris Saint-Germain this summer, it all really started for the Swedish international at Coventry, and Football League World has taken a closer look at how much each Gyokeres goal cost the Sky Blues.
Gyokeres recorded 17 Championship goals in his first season as a permanent Coventry player, helping the side to a respectable 12th-placed finish under Robins.
But Gyokeres would inspire Coventry much higher up the table and into promotion contention the following campaign. In a way, the Swede truly exploded and established himself as one of the division's leading players, working in tandem with creative midfield star Gus Hamer to plunder home 21 league goals along with a further 12 assists.
Ultimately, Gyokeres' two full seasons at Coventry returned an impressive haul of 40 goals from just 97 matches.
By measure of the £1 million fee the Sky Blues paid for his services, each goal was worth just £25,000.
What first seemed a risky gamble has now proven to represent astute business - perhaps the best any Championship side will conduct for many a year, for that matter - and £25,000 per goal is a remarkable return when you consider how many frontmen have failed to deliver at this level after joining rival clubs for more sizable fees.
Coventry ended up selling Gyokeres for an initial €20 million (£17.1 million), but have netted a further €4 milion (£3.4 million) in bonuses, and could be in line to profit even more this summer. That's because Sporting reportedly value the 26-year-old attacker at €70m (£59.8 million), with Coventry entitled to 10 percent of the profit.
In turn, Coventry will receive an additional €4.5 million (£3.8 million) if Sporting sell him for that figure, as the Portuguese club will have made a £45 million profit.
Coventry may wish they had reaped all the rewards of Gyokeres' true, world-class goalscoring form, but to be in line to collect, all in all, around £25 million after paying just £1 million four years ago is truly outstanding business.
