Liam Delap is not the striker we’ve heard linked most to Chelsea in the last few months – that prize would have to go to Victor Osimhen or Viktor Gyokeres – but he’s certainly among the names that come up most often.
As the summer draws closer, it’s becoming clear that a few teams at the top of the Premier League are really targeting strikers, and Chelsea are among them. Delap looks to be one of the most popular options, and that should be no surprise.
The 22 year old is young, English, talented, and has managed to bag a decent number of goals for an Ipswich team who look set to go down after just one season back in the top flight..
A new detail has just been revealed which makes a move (to Chelsea or one of their rivals) much more likely – the Daily Mail are today reporting that Delap has a £40m release clause in his contract should his team be relegated.
They are the first publication to mention such a clause. It would certainly shake things up massively and make the England Under-21 striker a more affordable option for the Blues and their opposition.

As the window gets closer, we’re seeing more and more details about how much some of the top options in the market will cost. Osimhen has a €75m clause active this summer, as reported by Fabrizio Romano last month.
Meanwhile last night we reported on the news that Wolves’ Matheus Cunha has a €75m clause. Benjamin Sesko is believed to have one at a similar level.
All in all, it’s going to be an expensive operation without doubt – but far more will come down to how much competition we have, as that could push the price up well beyond the clause.
