Ajax draw attention to the fight against hate on social media with special shirts

Ajax will play against NAC Breda on Sunday in special shirts to draw attention to hate on social media. The main sponsor will be replaced on the shirts by the words: ‘silence social hate.’ The new kits are in response to a new campaign.

With the campaign launched today called ‘social code of conduct’ Ajax wants to combat hate messages on social media. The Eredivisie leaders will enforce codes of conduct on all their social media channels with the help of AI technology. This will detect and hide hate messages.

Ajax state that they see that online standards are increasingly blurring and that this can have an impact on youth. “Children read along and think that this is a normal form of interaction, which increases the level of acceptance of this bad behavior among youth.”

Captain Jordan Henderson and goalkeeper Remco Pasveer are two of the faces of the campaign. Henderson thinks it’s good that Ajax has started this. “I’ve been active in football for a long time and online hate has become a part of the sport. It’s good that the club is trying to get rid of this.”

Pasveer thinks that by hiding and detecting hate reactions Ajax set a good example. “Children are less likely to think that hate reactions are normal and part of it.”
