Asllani is now midway through his third season at Inter.

The Albanian has not become a regular starter. That is not very surprising.

But what is more problematic is the fact that Asllani doesn’t yet seem capable of offering reliable backup in holding midfield.

The 22-year-old has put in some impressive displays in the stead of Hakan Calhanoglu. He acquitted himself very well against Venezia last weekend in Serie A, for example.

However, Asllani has also had some much less convincing performances as well. He looked to be struggling in the midfield battle against Bologna on Wednesday.

During the match, there were some boos from the San Siro directed at Asllani.

It seems evident that some Inter fans have seen enough of the former Empoli midfielder. They don’t believe he’s up to the standard to play for the Nerazzurri.

It is not hard to interpret this sentiment.

And now, the question is what comes next for Asllani.

The Albanian is not going to be leaving Inter during the January transfer window. So he’ll certainly have more chances to prove himself over the rest of the campaign.

However. the element of hostility in the reception from the fans points to the fact that Asllani may now be swimming against the current.

If Asllani cannot turn things around, this may be the end of the road for him at Inter.
