FC Barcelona are handling a number of off-the-field situations that are making more noise than their performances on the pitch and that is never a good place to be in. Hansi Flick will be keen for his team to put in an excellent performance in the Super Cup to get fans to talk about the actual game.

One of the biggest concerns surrounding FC Barcelona for almost the better part of a year now is the ‘Will he, won’t he?’ saga with midfield star Frenkie de Jong who is on high wages and has a contract with the club until 2026.

De Jong missed the first 75% of 2024 through injury and when he returned, he looked a pale shadow of his former imperious self. That said, the Dutchman has started 2025 well, with an impressive showing against UD Barbastro.

The issue with Frenkie de Jong is that while he continues to slip down the cracks, the likes of Pedri, Gavi, Marc Casado, and Fermin Lopez seem to be growing in stature and rising up the pecking order at the cost of the captain.

Now, as per Fichajes, Barcelona Sporting Director Deco has had enough and taken a very clear stance on the future of Frenkie de Jong, making him available for sale for around €50-€60m. One wonders if any club would pay this kind of money for the Dutchman.

Make no mistake, if he is fully fit and firing, Frenkie has the potential to become one of the best midfielders in the world. However, the story of the Dutchman’s career so far has always been ‘being there and thereabouts’ but not reaching the elite level.

In his current form though, no club will want to spend exorbitantly to sign the Barcelona midfielder. Considering the fact that his contract also expires in 2026, it will come as no surprise that teams look to wait it out and get him on free.

It remains to be seen whether Barcelona still negotiate with Frenkie to extend his contract and if the Dutchman is willing to take a pay cut in connection with his relevance in the team. Let’s wait and see how it plays out.
