Third-tier Arminia Bielefeld shocked defending champions Bayer Leverkusen to secure a place in the final of the German Cup.
Bielefeld came from behind to win 2-1, making history as the first team from outside the top two divisions to eliminate four Bundesliga sides in a single cup campaign.
Currently fourth in Germany's third tier, the club had already claimed victories over Union Berlin, Freiburg, and Werder Bremen before their remarkable win over the reigning Bundesliga champions.
Leverkusen took the lead in the 17th minute thanks to Jonathan Tah, but their advantage lasted only three minutes before Marius Wörl levelled things up with a low shot past keeper Lukas Hradecky.
Then, just before half-time, Maximilian Grosser scored with a volley from close range to complete Bielefeld’s turnaround, handing Leverkusen their first German Cup loss under manager Xabi Alonso.
Arminia Bielefeld, once a Bundesliga side but now competing in the third division, secured a place in the cup final for the first time in their history.
The second finalist will be determined this Wednesday, with Stuttgart facing RB Leipzig in the other semi-final, scheduled for 7:45pm.
