Celtic: Kasper Schmeichel retirement claim made amid injury fears

Kasper Schmeichel has been Celtic's number one between the posts since arriving in the summer as a free agent. The decision to replace the retiring Joe Hart with someone older than him raised a few eyebrows for sure, but the Danish international has proven that he is still capable of performing at a high level.

Schmeichel continues to represent his national team as well. And it was during a game between Denmark and Portugal that he suffered a shoulder injury.

It was just not limited to that. Schmeichel actually continued to play on with the injury, despite being in visible pain, because Denmark had used up all their substitutions by then. Going off that point would have meant that not only would his side have gone down to 10 men but an outfield player would also have to play as the goalkeeper.

It has been several days since that injury but the extent of it is still not clear. So, it does not feel like good news is around the corner.

Despite the recent injury, Schmeichel has been backed to continue playing into his 40s. As reported by the Daily Record, Gavin Rae told The Sunday Post:

"I reckon Kasper could play on till he's into his 40s for sure."He's had a great season which is testament to everything about him and how he goes about his business. Now he's picked up an unfortunate injury but that's football."It happens and you have to deal with it. Knowing him, he'll come back stronger and I'm sure he'll play on for a good while longer."

The extent of Schmeichel's injury remains to be seen. There have been some suggestions that he could be ruled out for the remainder of the season but Celtic fans will be hoping that the Danish goalkeeper is back before that. They need his quality, experience and leadership between the posts.

In Schmeichel's absence, it was Viljami Sinisalo who got the nod against Hearts in Celtic's recent game. And he managed to keep a clean sheet, which should have boosted his confidence as he looks set for a short run, at least, with the first-team gloves.
