Chelsea beat Everton 1-0 at home today to rack up a second win in a row and keep their Champions League hopes alive.
It wasn’t the best game we’ve seen them play this season, but they got the job done and there were promising signs – a great save from Robert Sanchez at the end and a first goal in 13 for Nicolas Jackson could prove vital in restoring their confidence.
But the BBC’s Nizaar Kinsella noted a continued issue too:
“The one concern for Chelsea is that forward Cole Palmer has gone from their best player to arguably their worst,” Kinsella wrote after full time.
“Today, against Everton, he was outshone by all of his other attacking colleagues, from Nicolas Jackson to Noni Madueke. His goal drought now stands at a huge 17 matches and it simply appears that he is massively struggling to get himself going.”
Before, Palmer was playing well and the ball just wasn’t going in. Now he’s just playing badly.

Still, Palmer’s continued struggles are just one aspect of a win that was otherwise pretty positive. It was a slow first half – once again, but there were also some promising signs from Enzo Maresca’s team. Moise
Certainly Joe Cole, who was summing the game up for TNT Sports, saw it in a positive light:
“Sitting fourth now with that win is psychologically massive for Chelsea and puts them in a good position for the run in. When you see a group of players celebrating like that you know it’s been a tough afternoon,” the former Blues winger said.
“Everton to their credit came here and made it very, very difficult and had their chances at the end, but it’s a good win for Chelsea.”
Onwards and upwards…
