Club América, who were decimated by injuries last season and need to fill the void left by Nico Castillo, will be looking far and wide for a striker.

Surprisingly, several reports out of Paraguay claim that the Mexican giants are basically done with their quest.

It’s heavily believed that Paraguay international and Real Madrid striker Sergio Díaz, currently on loan with Cerro Porteño, is close to agreeing a deal with the azulcremas.

Even though the player is just 22, he made his professional debut back in 2014 at age 15 and was brought in by Real Madrid two years later in a €5m deal following impressive performances at the 2015 South American Youth Football Championship with the Paraguay U-20s and the 2016 Toulon Tournament with the U-23s.

Díaz featured prominently with the Real Madrid Castilla side during the 2016-17 season and made his international debut against France at the end of the season.

Real Madrid then loaned out to second-division side CD Lugo for the 2017-18 season, where the player suffered a serious knee injury just 10 games in and missed the rest of the season.

Díaz was then loaned to Brazilian giants Corinthians but barely featured, re-aggravating his knee injury in the process. Over the last year, Díaz found himself back on loan at boyhood club Cerro Porteño.

It’s said that Real Madrid are currently unhappy with his performances in Paraguay and believe he should have been able to recover his past form by now.

He is currently under contract with Los Blancos until 2021 and his existing loan deal runs until the end of the year.

It’s uncertain whether they would send Díaz to América for a short-term loan or if they are looking to sell the player outright.
