The Gunners’ attacking options are dwindling
Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli will undergo a scan on Thursday to learn the extent of a hamstring injury picked up during the Gunners’ Carabao Cup semi-final loss to Newcastle.
Martinelli picked up the injury in the first half of Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Newcastle at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night.
The Brazilian felt his hamstring towards the end of the first half and signalled to the bench that he had to come off.
Ethan Nwaneri was brought on in place of him in the 37th minute and Martinelli will undergo a scan on Thursday.
“He (Martinelli) felt something, I think it was his hamstring and he wasn’t comfortable to continue,” said Mikel Arteta. “So we will have to have any MRI scan tomorrow to see the extent of the injury.”
Arsenal will be praying that the scan results show good news for Martinelli as they are desperately short on forward options.
Bukayo Saka is out until March with a hamstring injury and Gabriel Jesus will not play again this season after undergoing knee surgery last month.
Arsenal tried to sign a forward during the January transfer window, but they were unable to and Arteta admitted on Tuesday he was “disappointed” about that.
The Gunners have a break in the calendar now after this defeat in Newcastle and they are next in action on February 15, when they travel to Leicester.
The squad are heading to Dubai on Thursday for some warm-weather training and will hope to return rejuvenated as they fight for the Champions League and Premier League.
