Phillips is believed to be "desperate" to move back to Leeds following their promotion.
Kalvin Phillips is reportedly “desperate” to return to Leeds United this summer.
According to reports in the print edition of The Daily Mirro (April 23rd), Phillips is pushing to return to Elland Road after previously spending eight seasons as a senior player with the West Yorkshire outfit.
Daniel Farke’s side were promoted back to the Premier League when they demolished Stoke City 6-0 on Easter Monday, and that appears to have seriously boosted the attraction of a return to the club where it all began for Phillips.
His career has gone downhill since his £42m move to Manchester City back in the summer of 2022, but a return to Leeds could be perfect to get his career back on track.
While the Whites’ return to the Premier League will have huge ramifications throughout the club, it also looks set to have a potentially decisive say in where Phillips’ future may lie.
The midfielder has been linked with a return to his boyhood club for a large portion of the season now, with his loan spell at top flight strugglers Ipswich Town seemingly a temporary solution for him to get more football.
Now though, with Leeds destined to play Premier League football again next season, the 29-year-old appears to be prepared to move back to Elland Road, should any advances come from the club.
Despite the huge level of success they have enjoyed in the Championship this term, Leeds will undoubtedly need to strengthen if they are to compete at the top table of English football next season.
With that in mind, bringing somebody like Phillips to the club, who has ample experience at that level of football, plus on the international stage, could greatly strengthen the spine of their team.
With everything that has happened in his career since he left Leeds, a move back home could be exactly what Phillips needs to get himself back on track.
He left the club at the end of the 2021/22 season, after helping them secure their top flight status thanks to a late win at Brentford on the final day of the campaign. He had also been part of Marcelo Bielsa’s side that achieved promotion from the Championship and ended their drought of 16 years without top tier football.
However, he has struggled to properly force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans since crossing the Pennines, having made just 16 league appearances for the club.
The last two seasons have seen the 29-year-old go on loan to both West Ham and Ipswich in a bid to re-vitalise his career, but neither have really delivered the desired level of success.
Having been one of England’s starting midfielders as recently as 2022, the drop off that he has suffered in recent years has come as a big surprise.
At his age, Phillips needs to be playing regular football, and a move back to Leeds, where he would likely be much more comfortable than he has elsewhere in recent years, could do him the world of good.
